Senior Kelly Fogarty achieved a milestone on Tuesday Feb. 14: she scored 1,000 plus points in a high school basketball career at Walpole. Although Fogarty reached the milestone by contributing  10 points in the game, the Walpole Girls Basketball fell 65-42 to a tough Newton North team.

According to Walpole High School Athletic Records, only six other people have hit this benchmark:  legends like Tim Collins (1988), Meghan Sullivan (1989), Nicole Wolfe (2002), Tim Clifford (2004),  Matt Wolfe (2004) and Summer King (2015).

Fogarty achieved this rare accomplishment while only playing three seasons in a Rebels uniform as she played for girls basketball powerhouse Bishop Feehan freshman year. She now has exactly 1,001 points in her career with 3 regular season games remaining, and she has averaged 16.1 points per game through her Walpole High School career.

The senior captain has had the 1000 point milestone as a goal since she started her career at Walpole High School.

“I knew it would be difficult,” she said, “but it was a personal goal that I worked hard to reach.”

Scoring at such a high level on the hardwood has looked easy for Fogarty, but it has been an acquired skill.

“I have worked very hard outside of just practice taking a ton of extra shots and working on different ways to score and get open,” said Fogarty.

The effort has not only paid off for Fogarty with the 1,000 points, but she has also earned a NCAA Division 1 Scholarship to the University of Maine.

Kelly’s monumental day was somewhat sullied by a strong Newton North team who overpowered Walpole in the second half to grab a large lead they would not overcome. Walpole played hard throughout the game, but 25 point performances from Newton North’s Sayawni Lassiter and Elizabeth Davis propelled the Tigers in the long run to a decisive victory.

The tough loss did not deter the Rebels as according to Fogarty, they showed true heart and grit as they never gave up to the higher ranked Newton North team. These characteristics shown will be crucial for the Rebels playoff push.

“We already qualified for the tournament and we have a really good chance of going far in Division 2 South,” said Fogarty.
